Nehemiah 13
[31b]Remember me with favor, O my God.

How will we remember Nehemiah?

Nehemiah was a man of tremendous integrity. He did not make a move without prayer. He was a man of tremendous action— once directed by God. He was a man under authority both to the Lord and to the King. He trusted God to provide every need and was not afraid to ask for those provisions.

He was a skilled negotiator and diplomat who knew how to get things done. He was a man of incredible determination in the face of attacks and discouragement. He knew that it is the Lord who is victorious. He was a brilliant strategist and engineer. He was a leader able to motivate people who had been discouraged for years. He had a single-minded tenacity that rallied people to the call of God. He was also able to address directly the sin that so easily ensnares people.

God accomplished so much through Nehemiah. He can do a lot through you, too. Our challenge is to be ourselves and yet learn from the example of Nehemiah. We are not all Nehemiahs, though we might want to pull hair from time to time.

Each of us can be inspired and discover more of who God wants us to be as we consider a great man like Nehemiah. Through Nehemiah, we discover that prayer is not a temperament option only for a few; it is the foundation of everything we do. Integrity is not optional; it is what holds us together when we are under attack. Being under appropriate authority is not a cafeteria choice. God calls us to recognize the authority He ordains.

We may not all be brilliant engineers, but in our own way and in our own places we can be who God wants us to be.

Nehemiah basically asked to be remembered by God for His good works. The NAS and KJV translate this verse: "Remember me, O my God, for good." The Hebrew word also means favor. It is the starting of grace. "Remember me with grace, O my God.”

As people on this side of the cross, we know that it is only with the favor or grace of God that we are remembered. That is my prayer for you, for us, today.

Remember us with favor, with grace, O my God.

Lord, thank You for the witness and courage of Nehemiah. May I be a stronger and better person for having read his story. Teach me daily to build the walls of security that are found only in You and Your Word. Remember me with your grace, in Jesus' name, Amen.
