Hebrews 11
[31] By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.

Do you remember Rahab? She was the prostitute who lived in Jericho and sheltered the two Israelite spies who came into town from Shittim. She hid the spies on the roof and then helped them escape.

The spies discovered a curious thing: Rahab believed in their God! She said to the spies, "I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted, and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below (Joshua 2:8‑11)".

All those years, the Israelites had been afraid of the enemies in Canaan when, in fact, the people of Jericho were afraid of the God of the Israelites! Rahab saw clearly the reality of God and wanted to leave her old life behind. She professed her faith in God and put her belief into action by risking everything to save the spies.

Rahab marked her house with a scarlet cord left in the window so that on the day of conquest her family might be spared. The scarlet cord has often been called a type or symbol of Christ because it was an act of faith that saved Rahab and tied her to a future with Israel. In fact, the Hebrew word for "hope" come from the word for a cord or rope. Hope is the cord that ties us to a future. Rahab actually began a whole new life after the conquest. She lived among the Israelites and was grafted into the family tree of Jesus.

What is the faith of Rahab? It is the faith to recognize the one true God. It is the faith to welcome those who work on behalf of the Lord. It is the faith to risk what you have in order to take hold of what God wants to give you. It is the faith leave an old way of life behind in order to start a whole new way of living. It is the faith to be grafted into the people of God so that He can give you a destiny.

Lord, give me faith to recognize Your power and majesty. Give me faith to welcome those who labor in Your behalf. Give me faith to risk what is comfortable in order to take hold of what You have for me. Give me faith to start fresh with You everyday. In Jesus' name, Amen.
