Exodus 11
[1] Now the LORD had said to Moses, "I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. [2] Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold." [3] (The LORD made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh's officials and by the people.)

Nine plagues. Count 'em, nine. They came in three cycles, increasing from annoyance to misery to destruction. The land now lay in ruins. Yet, Pharaoh showed no real sign of repenting before the mighty power of God. The Lord told Moses it was not over yet. He would send one more plague.
God had demonstrated the impotence of the gods of Egypt. The most powerful nation on earth was not devastated economically. The population of Egypt was in a state of fear. They were getting the idea this God of the Hebrews was the real deal. Moses was highly regarded by the officials and the people.
When the Hebrews came asking their Egyptian neighbors for help, the Egyptians were favorably disposed toward the people of Israel. This was how God provided in advance for the start of the long journey ahead. After one more plague, God said, Pharaoh would release his slaves without any reservations. In light of their soon-coming deliverance, the Israelites were to request silver and gold from the Egyptians, who apparently were more kindly disposed to them than was Pharaoh.
Interestingly, Moses was now highly esteemed by Pharaoh's officials. They had seen the power of the God proclaimed by Moses. They had also seen the folly of Pharaoh. One of the problems with absolute power held by kings and tyrants is that everyone around them may know that the king is wrong, but no one will dare to speak up. We can see this in various forms of government, but particularly in inherited monarchies.
So, what could possibly happen now? The plagues had struck fear into the hearts of the populace. But now, the 10th plague would bring devastation that no one could have imagined. Great sorrow was about to come to every Egyptian family with children. This plague would result in the release of God's people.
The big message. God is God. We are not. No leader, elected or otherwise, is "sovereign" over a people. The people belong to God. The message of God is freedom. If we will not listen, God is willing to do whatever is necessary to set His people free.

Father God, I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. I pray that You would put the message of freedom and hope within my heart and upon my tongue. In Jesus' Name.
