Genesis 13
[10] Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) [11] So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: [12] Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. [13] Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
[14] The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. [15] All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. [16] I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. [17] Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
[18] So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord.

So Abram parted company with his nephew Lot. As they parted, Abram gave Lot the choice of location. Not only did Lot choose the most fertile of the lands, he also chose to pitch his tents near Sodom. He chose an easy path and allowed the glitter of urban life to catch his eye! Sodom was a big city with all the "excitement" that goes with urban life. The KJV renders this phrase that Lot "pitched his tent toward Sodom." He set out to lean toward the enticement of sin. Of course, we will see what a great mistake that was!
There is a powerful message here that the walk of faith requires us to listen to God. There is nothing wrong with urban settings, but Lot never consulted God about going near this place. Big cities are fertile places to do evangelism and ministry. Still, when Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom, it was clear that the city was influencing him much more than he was the city.
We live in a time where bright lights and urban temptations are all around us. In fact, the rapid growth of communication technology means that things once confined to big cities are now intruding into our homes via computer and television. In our journey of faith, we must take particular care not to "pitch our tents toward Sodom." We must be careful not to lean toward the ways of the world just because they seem exciting or entertaining. We must take care to keep our hearts and minds open to hearing the Lord.

Lord, I am pitching my tent toward You! I want to live leaning toward the Kingdom! Give me ears to hear Your leading and eyes to see Your path for me. Protect me from the temptation of the world. Walk with me. In Jesus' name.
