Romans 15
[13] May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Overflowing with hope. Would you like for that description to be said of you? Actually, this short sentence is a blessing-- that is, a pronouncement of God's blessing. It is a little like a benediction said at the end of a worship service, but here it is in the middle of a teaching and exhortation. Benedictions were actually common at the beginning of Hebrew worship to receive blessings wherever and whenever we find them.

"May the God of hope fill you…." There are many gods out there: "gods" that fill us with discouragement, fear, anxiety, or just busyness. Only the one true and living God of hope can fill us with hope.
"May this God fill you with all joy…" -- not "some joy" or "partial joy" but ALL joy.
"May this God fill you with peace…" -- that inner assurance that He has things in control even when everything seems to be going crazy.
Why? So that you may overflow with hope. We are to be awash with hope, not mired in pessimism. We are to abound with hope in ways that make a difference in a hopeless world. How do we have such hope? Is it by "trying harder" or "hoping more"? No. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit in you. That is the only source of deep hope.
Think about that. What could the world need more today than hope? People do desperate things these days because of hopelessness. People cry out because of hopelessness. But we are to be beacons of hope overflowing into the lives of those around us-- quenching the thirsting hopeless soul with the Good News of Jesus.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name.
