Genesis 3
[20] Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

A name is a fascinating thing. The man was named "Adam" which is connected to the word for "ground" (adamah). The name speaks of his origin. Adam came from the ground, and his name is a reminder here of his created-ness.
Adam gave his wife two names. The first was in Genesis 2:23. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." The Hebrew means "out of man." It would always be remembered that woman came "out of man."
This was before the Fall but still reflected an order of creation that the Apostle Paul would refer to centuries later. "For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man" (1 Cor. 11:8-9).
Adam gave his wife another name, Eve. Eve means literally "living." She would become the mother of all the living. The name "woman" points to her origin, but the name "Eve" points to her destiny. The Apostle Paul explained that "in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God" (1 Cor. 11:11-12). Woman draws her origin from man, but man will draw life from woman. Eve had an origin, but she also had a destiny.
What do we gather from all this? There is a tendency to forever blame Eve for the Fall and not look toward her future. As we have seen, the truth is that both Adam and Eve were responsible for the sin that led to the Fall. If anything, Adam surrendered leadership by his passive silence in the whole situation.
Neither of the humans is permanently "cursed," but post-Fall, they must now make their way in a harsh and difficult world. Now, they need each other more than ever, and it is from Eve that all humanity, including the King of kings and Lord of lords, will be born. Life will come from Eve, the mother of all the living. She had an origin and a Fall, but also a destiny!
This is critical. We are not defined by our origin but rather by our destiny. The Lord is pointing toward a future. The prophet Jeremiah revealed that God has a plan to overcome the harsh consequence of our sin. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).
Give thanks to the Lord today for Eve. Give thanks for origins but more for destinies. Give thanks to God for woman, who brings the precious gift of life into the world. We have a past, but we have a future. Rejoice in knowing that God is at work even in the Fall with His plan of redemption. Give thanks that "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come" (2 Cor. 5:17)!

Lord God, I give thanks for the completeness we find in one another and in You. I give thanks for beginnings but even more for destiny. I give thanks that there is hope and a future even in the most tragic of times. In Jesus' Name.
