Revelation 1

[13]  and among the lampstands was someone "like a son of man," dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.  [14]  His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. [15]  His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. [16]  In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

What does Jesus look like? There have been thousands of portrayals in art, cinema, and media. But we know that these are all approximations at best. One project by forensic anthropologists was done to reconstruct the most likely appearance of Jesus in the first century. The result was unimpressive.

So, what does Jesus really look like... today? Not a product of our collective imagination, wishful thinking, or forensic science? Revelation gives us an amazing picture of what Jesus looks like right now.

John described the glorified Christ as something like the Son of Man but went on from there. He is one clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. This was the manner of a king or a high priest.

Isaiah 6:1 describes the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Robes were worn by kings, but most frequently, this word is used to describe a priest. The golden sash was worn by the high priest (Exodus 28:4; Leviticus 16:4).

Of course, Hebrews 2:17-18 describes Jesus as our High Priest. “Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

This is the glorified Christ. His hair was white, like white wool, like snow. Daniel 7:9 - “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.”

Even more, was revealed to John. His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace.  His voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars—the angels of the seven churches. From his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, a symbol of the Word.

Hebrews 4:12-13 – “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”  His face was like the sun shining in full strength.

This is the Jesus who will meet us. This is the Jesus who has gone to prepare a place for us and will come and take us to be with Him. This is the Jesus that we can trust to reveal what we need to know about the future and know will carry us through.

Father God, I love Your Son, Jesus. I desire to walk with His Spirit and strength by Your Holy Spirit. Strengthen me each day as I listen to Your Word and Spirit. In Jesus' Name.
