Hebrews 2
[5] It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. [6] But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? [7] You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor [8] and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present, we do not see everything subject to him. [9] But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present, we do not see everything subject to him. [9] But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
It happened again the other day. I answered the church phone, and a voice asked to speak to the person with authority to make decisions regarding business equipment.
"Well, I am the Pastor of the church..." I replied. Apparently, that was not quite enough.
"Do you have authority to make decisions regarding business equipment?" she pressed. I guess the question made sense even if it was a little annoying. It turned out she was selling postage metering equipment. Why fool with anyone but a decision maker? Why make your big pitch only to find out that the person you sold your idea to must go to someone else? If the pastor can't make this call, then put me in touch with someone who can.
The writer of Hebrews makes much the same argument about angelic encounters. If you are really serious about doing business with God, why talk to someone who is not in charge and who has no authority?
Angels are great. God placed the Son of Man below the angels when He entered into human flesh, but don't be fooled. God has put all things under His feet. There is nothing that is not subject to the Son of Man. It may not appear that way to us all the time. He often wears clothing more like a janitor's than a "CEO." But He is still in charge. He just likes to serve.
If ever we could see with spiritual eyes, we would discover that everything is indeed under His feet. Jesus has everything under His authority. Everything. Just call Him up, and you will see.
"Hello, may I please speak to the person who has the authority to make decisions regarding my life?"
"I am Jesus. The Son of Man."
"Does that mean you have authority over all the areas that affect me?"
"Yes. That would be me."
"You look more like someone who came to make repairs."
"I do that, too. Do you need a repair?"
"Maybe. Are you sure that everything is under your control?"
"Positive."
"Perhaps I should talk to an angel higher up."
"If you would prefer to speak with one of my servants, that is fine. But I AM the One in charge."
"Oh. Okay. Perhaps we should talk."
"Yes. We should talk."
Lord, forgive me if I have ever placed anything or anyone even close to You as authority in my life. I confess my faith in the Son of Man. You are in charge. You are capable of handling every problem. Thank you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
