Genesis 27
[30] After Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. [31] He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."
[32] His father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?"
"I am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."
[33] Isaac trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him--and indeed he will be blessed!"
[34] When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me--me too, my father!"
[35] But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."
[36] Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob? He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"
[37] Isaac answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?"
[38] Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.
[39] His father Isaac answered him, "Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness, away from the dew of heaven above. [40] You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck."

Esau had missed the blessing of the eldest son by only minutes! It was a one-time blessing. It was irreversible. And Jacob had gotten it.   Actually, though, this was the oracle of the Lord to Rebekah. The Lord had said to Rebekah, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger" (Genesis 25:23). God was still in charge.
Scripture tells us that Esau was godless in his decision to sell his birthright to appease his appetite. Now, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears (Hebrews 12:16-17). So Esau received a leftover blessing.
Esau received what remained, and what was left sounds more like a curse than a blessing. You will dwell away from riches. You will live by the sword. You will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck. At least in the final line, there was a blessing of liberty.
The Good News is that we do not have to receive a leftover blessing!   The fact is that God is not limited by a blessing He gives to another. John tells us that "From the fullness of His grace, we have all received one blessing after another" (John 1:16). Paul tells us that God "redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit" (Galatians 3:14). We are grafted into the lineage and blessing of Abraham. In Christ, there is no lack of blessing due to one being blessed. There are no "leftovers." As Paul put it, "I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ" (Romans 15:29). We stand in the full measure of the blessing of Christ. No leftover blessings for us.
We stand in a time when we remember the full measure of God's love for us. We recognize the full extent of the blessing of Christ and how costly this blessing was. Rejoice today, knowing that God did not hold back His one and only Son. Rejoice today in the knowledge that we do not stand in line for leftovers. We are redeemed, and we stand in the full measure of His grace.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephes. 1:3). I give thanks for the full measure of Your blessing. In Jesus' name.
