Chapter 22 of 2 Samuel is entirely a song of praise regarding God's strength and faithfulness in delivering David from his enemies.

2 Samuel 22:29-37
[29] You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light. [30] With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. [31] "As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. [32] For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? [33] It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. [34] He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. [35] He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. [36] You give me your shield of victory; you stoop down to make me great. [37] You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.

David knew the Lord as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. He knew the Lord as his rescuer. He knew the spacious place that the Lord brings us out to by His grace. He knew the Lord's defensive power. But he also knew the Lord as his lamp.
The Hebrew word means to "glisten" but also refers to a light source used to advance into darkness—a candle, torch or oil lamp in that day. The Lord is the one who lights the way so that battle can advance. Light was an offensive weapon in the time of David.
The ability to see is critical to battle. In the ancient world, warriors would use torches at night to confuse and intimidate the enemy, showing strength in the darkness. Covering torches to light the way without revealing numbers was another strategy of night battle. Modern warriors use night vision technology for stealth or "shock and awe" to intimidate at night, but the principles are the same. The Lord is my "night vision" so that I can advance. The Lord is the light that drives out the darkness in which my enemy hides.
This part of David's song is a turning point. Thus far, everything has been defensive, but now the Lord is the Lamp that turns darkness into light and by which David could advance against an enemy. The Lord is the Lamp that allowed David to scale walls and provide protection in the dark.
The power of light is amazing. Without His light, we cannot operate in darkness. But with the Lord as our lamp, we can advance against the enemy and scale the walls that impede our progress. We are shielded from the enemy of darkness and able to stand on the Rock of the Lord. Because of the light of the Lord, we can run like deer and stand on the heights. Because of the illumination of the Lord, we are ready for the battles ahead.
Jesus said— "I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).
John's Gospel declares this truth: This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God" (3:19-21).
Have you felt surrounded by darkness? Unable to advance because of the shadows? Are there walls you cannot even see to overcome? The Lord is your Lamp. He is your night vision. He will invade the darkness around you. He will light your path. He will allow your advance. He will light the way so that you can scale the walls. He is your rock and will shield you from the darkness.

Father God, light my way. Be my night vision. Invade the darkness around me. Make my path clear. Give me clear vision to scale the walls I encounter and run like a deer to the heights. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
