Galatians 6

[15] Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.   [16] Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.

At the bottom line, what really counts is not the external observance of religious laws. What really counts is the change that happens within a person because he or she has met God in Christ.  That is all. Nothing more or less.

Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything as a means of salvation.   That was pretty clear.  The only thing that counts is to be born again. We must become a new creation by the power of God. This comes about not by observing the law in any form but by receiving and stepping out upon the truth of the gospel.        Paul explained this Good News in his second letter to the Corinthians-- If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come (5:17)!  Old stuff? Gone!  New stuff?  Ready to be discovered.  Finding the new creation that is in Christ is everything.

At the end of the day, nothing else matters except whether you and I have discovered the New Life that is Christ alone.  This is the truth, even to the house of Israel.

We would do well to ask some direct questions.  Are we trusting in the feeling of a season, or in the grace of the Lord Jesus? Are we finding New Life in the New Creation of Christ in us, or are we looking to nostalgia in the ways of old? In many ways, the legalizers who preached circumcision to the new converts were stuck in the past. Do we get stuck in the past sometimes?

The way of Jesus is not about any of the external trappings.  It is not about rituals or a particular set of songs. It is not about one group or movement that is temporarily more popular than another group. It is not about doing a specific set of behaviors or a style of worship. It is all about the work of the Spirit in us, making us into the new creation in Christ.

Where are you today? Are you walking more in religion than in relationship?  Are you more about ritual than you are about regeneration?  Are you walking in the past or discovering the future in Christ?

Father God, I want the New Creation. I want to leave the past behind and see the new that is to come.  I want to discover the new that is to come.  In Jesus' Name.
