John 6
[16] When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, [17] where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. [18] A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. [19] When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. [20] But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid." [21] Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

John’s account of Jesus walking on the water differs in some fascinating ways from the more preached versions of this miracle in Matthew and Mark. Matthew clarifies that Jesus actually made the disciples get into the boat and head across the lake. Matthew’s account also includes the fact that Peter was called to walk upon the water.
John includes an equally remarkable miracle that we often miss! After Jesus got into the boat, the entire vessel and its occupants were immediately transported several miles from the middle of the lake to Capernaum! Wow! We don’t know if the boat left a significant wake while moving at something close to light speed or if the vessel was simply translated to the shore in much the same way that Jesus passed through the crowd at Nazareth. But this is quite a wonderful miracle.
Such miraculous transport is not common in the Bible but also is not without precedent. The Lord took Philip the evangelist away from his meeting with the Ethiopian eunuch and he reappeared in the town of Azotus. God can get you where you need to be very fast if necessary!
So what do we gather from John’s shorter account? Of course, we don’t want to miss the fact that Jesus comes to His own when they are in times of trouble. He speaks the words, "It is I; don't be afraid." He walks upon the waters that trouble us and even calms the storms of life.
But we also do not want to miss the miraculous transport. Once the Disciples were willing to invite Jesus into the boat, He moved them miraculously to the place where they needed to be. There is a powerful truth there. Now don’t misunderstand. I am not suggesting that we give up autos and planes. But there is a great truth that once we invite the Lord into our vessel He will get us where we are supposed to be. He may do so at a rapid, even miraculous, pace.
Have you ever labored greatly over an endeavor only to find that when you finally gave up and invited the Lord in you quickly saw progress you never imagined? Hours of anticipated work can become minutes. Long periods of developed can be slashed to days. Churches and ministries sometimes grow at a stunning pace. We even comment that “the Lord must be in that”.
While “success” must never be defined in worldly terms we cannot help but notice when the Lord miraculously transports an effort or endeavor to a place it could not have gotten to otherwise! While we can never “force” Jesus to do anything, our submission to Him will often clear paths in ways we could not have even asked for. This is not a formula for success, but it is a wonderful aspect of our relationship with Jesus.
Have you been laboring in the lake? Rowing against the wind? Struggling to achieve something for Jesus? Listen for His voice. Invite Him into the vessel and see where He takes you. It may not be the way you planned. It may not be the same destination of which you dreamed. But one thing is for sure: He will get you to the place you are supposed to be much faster than you can get where you thought you were going on your own.

Lord, Jesus, come into my vessel. I surrender to You. I surrender all my plans and goals to You. I am tired of rowing against the wind. Get me where I am supposed to be. In Jesus’ Name.
