John 13
[31] When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. [32] If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
[33] "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

Things were now set in motion. "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.” Judas had made his break with the light of Christ and was making the final arrangements to betray Jesus. Nothing was out of the control or knowledge of Jesus yet the treachery of man would only serve to glorify God.
This was a moment of separation. The closeness that the disciples had experiences with Jesus would now be contrasted by His majesty as He fulfilled the plan of God. “Where I am going, you cannot come.”
Jesus used the title “Son of Man” to describe Himself here. It is a title used in the Gospel of John twelve times to describe Jesus in seven specific ways. John systematically shows how Jesus fulfills the title “Son of Man”:
Jesus reveals divine truth (1:51)
Jesus has a supernatural origin (3:13; 6:62)
Jesus’ death by being "lifted up" achieves salvation for men (3:14; 8:28; 12:34)
Jesus exercises the prerogative of final judgment (5:27)
Jesus provides spiritual nourishment (6:27)
Jesus is being "glorified" (12:23; 13:31)
Jesus is glorified in death and resurrection (7:39; 12:16)
In theological terms, this is the title of the incarnate Christ who is the representative of humanity before God and the representative of God in human life. In the perfection of Christ's humanity, God finds the fullness of his expression to men.
In practical terms, this means Jesus is more than just our “heavenly buddy”. In Christian circles we are often very subjective in our experience of Christ, and rightly so. We will say that Jesus is “the best friend I ever had”. This is absolutely true. We sing about how “He walks with me and talks with me and tells me I am His own.”
This is a precious reality. We experience Jesus as a common man born among common people who traveled with common laborers preaching an uncommon message. As a teenager I got to know the “Jesus in blue jeans.” All this is true, but! But, we must not miss the majesty of the Son of Man!
John wants to be sure we know that Jesus is the revealer of truth that comes from the very heart and mind of God. Jesus is the one who achieves salvation for us. We may picture Him in blue jeans but he also is our final Judge. He is the Shepherd who nourishes but He is also glorified in death and resurrection.
Jesus drew away from the disciples for a time to complete His work as the Son of Man. He does not draw away from us. He is with us always, yet we must recognize both His closeness and His majesty.
Have you come to know this Jesus, who is so close and yet so majestic? We may know and experience Jesus in a number of subjective and even sentimental ways, but none of them will subtract in the slightest from His majesty as the Son of Man. He is glorified.

Lord, I thank You and praise You for relating to me in personal ways. In response, I honor You and praise You in all Your majesty and glory. I magnify Your name in my life. I praise You with my lips. I love You with my heart, mind soul and strength. In the name of Jesus, the Son of Man.
