John 21

[25] Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

John closed his Gospel with this interesting thought. The miracles and events recorded in the Gospel were ordered so as to communicate the specific testimony that Jesus was the Messiah. But Jesus did many other things as well.

In fact, Jesus did so many things that the world could not contain all the books if they were written down. Jesus lived a remarkable and wonderful earthly life. In just the three years of His public ministry, there were many other encounters with people we do not have access to. There were many conversations and dinners shared. There was much laughter and surely some tears. Jesus surely did many more miracles than we have recorded. Some were perhaps private and others simply drew less attention.

There were also many years of Jesus’ life for which we have no account. Before Jesus’ public ministry began, He lived with His family, learned His stepfather’s trade, and grew in favor with God and men (Luke 2:52). Certainly, there were many wonderful encounters and events in these years.

Another thought? In the twenty centuries since the death and resurrection of Jesus, no person has been more discussed or written about. No one has influenced more lives. Jesus continues to be the most remarkable life ever lived because He continues to live!

Jesus continues to share meals with people, laugh, and cry with them. He continues to converse on a daily basis with new friends and He continues to heal. Truly, if all the things Jesus has done were written down, the whole world would not have room for all the books.

But, in fact, we are books written by the Lord. We are books about His wonder, mercy and grace. In the Lord, we are letters from Christ written with the Spirit of the living God (2 Cor. 3:3). As we walk with the living Jesus, we are each a testament to His love and a beacon of His light. We are His library of love.

Are you walking with Jesus? John brought us this simple, profound truth:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son (John 3:16-19).

We are called to believe, trust wholly in Jesus by faith, and then walk with Him as He writes His letter of love in our lives.

Holy God, thank You for the gift of Jesus. Thank You for sending Your one and only Son to bring light into the darkness and life where there was only death. Thank You for the gift of the Gospel. Thank You for Your offer of grace, mercy and peace. Thank You for walking with me, loving me, and writing Your mercy into my life. In Jesus’ name.
