2 Samuel 7:1-17
[1] After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, [2] he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." [3] Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you." [4] That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: [5] "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? [6] I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. [7] Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"' [8] "Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel. [9] I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth. [10] And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning [11] and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. "'The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: [12] When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. [13] He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. [14] I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. [15] But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. [16] Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'" [17] Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
David was finally settling down in Jerusalem. There must have been a sense that things were about to get exciting. He was enjoying the first peace he had known in a very long time, but ,there was more. Where was all this headed? What did the Lord have in store? He was about to find out.
David began to consider building a more permanent structure where the Lord could reside among His people. As the king, he lived in an elaborate home, and he felt that the tent was no longer suitable for the Ark of the Covenant. But how could he know?
David asked the Prophet Nathan, who responded positively, but David soon learned that his intentions were premature. Since the time of the Exodus, the Lord had resided among the people in a temporary structure. There was no need now for anything different. In fact, it was not God's will for David to build Him a house; instead, God would build a house for David!
That is what we don't want to miss... the house of David. The description of this house of David was both a matter of legacy and destiny. What would be built shortly would point toward what was coming in the distant future.
God first reminded David that he had been called from being a shepherd of sheep to becoming the shepherd of God's people. God had deliberately gathered Israel to Himself and would plant them securely in their own land. The house to be built for David would be a royal house, a dynasty of kings. It would originate with him but would never end. The kingdom and its throne would be permanent, a realm over which the Son of David would reign forever.
The promise that David and his seed would be kings fulfilled the even older promise to Abraham and the covenant blessing that the patriarchs would be the fathers of a great nation and would rule from the house of Judah. Samuel anointed this one from Judah, David himself, of whom the Lord said, "He is the one."
The promise that the people of the Lord, David's kingdom Israel, would have an enduring land of their own was based on earlier commitments of the Lord. God said the seed of Abraham would receive the land of Canaan as a home forever. As for a temple, David would not be allowed to build it, but his son after him would have the honor of doing so.
The legacy of Abraham was being fulfilled in David both in the present day and in the future. Solomon and other strictly human descendants of David would build the Temple, while other elements of the Promise would be realized in the more distant future through the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of David.
Now stop and think. God's legacy and destiny are never contained in a house, a box, or any sort of human container. They are also far bigger than what we could think or ask.
Father God, give me the vision. Give me a view of Your legacy and destiny. Help me see what You are doing and planning for your people. Help me see more than just the big picture. Help me see the future and then have faith to walk into it. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
