Ephesians 1

[7b] … in accordance with the riches of God's grace [8] that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.   [9] And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, [10] to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

There are so many ways that God might have applied His grace to us.  He might have apportioned His grace.  He might have rationed out His grace.  He might have prescribed a limited grace.  He might have daubed us with grace or even sprinkled us with grace.  But instead, wow, He lavished His grace on us.

The Greek word used means to superabound in either quantity or quality, to be in excess, be superfluous, or in exceeding abundance.  A small amount of grace would still be, well, grace! And any amount of His grace is amazing.  But it was the choice of God to lavish His grace upon us in superabundance.

How did He do that?  He lavished His grace with all wisdom and understanding.  He gave us the blessing of freedom from sin and death but did not stop there. He lavished us with His wisdom and His understanding.  He opened our eyes to the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ.

Because of this lavished grace, believers get a peek into the meaning and movement of God’s purposes.  Believers can grasp something of the divine purpose of the ages and see its relevance in the present time.  We see this in His Word, and the unfolding plans prophesied there.  Everything in all of creation is moving toward a moment in which everything comes together under one head, Jesus Christ.

Do you get worried or upset about how things are going?  Do you fret over the state of the world?  Well, certainly, we are designed for good work in this world--to relieve suffering and share hope--but we were not designed to fret.

You were lavished with grace so that You would understand what is happening and have expectant hope.  You were given wisdom and understanding so that you would understand that God is in perfect control of all that is around us, and things are moving toward a conclusion of His design.

You have been lavished.  So, don’t fret; trust and hope.  Share and care.  Rejoice in the unfolding mystery of God’s love in Christ.

Father God, I am amazed by You.  I am amazed by how You love me.  Thank You for lavishing me with Your grace.  Thank You for giving me unfolding wisdom and understanding of the mystery of Your will and purpose.  I rejoice as I look toward that day when You will bring all things in heaven and earth together under Jesus.  In His Holy Name, I pray.
