Revelation 1

       [5]  and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful Witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

       Revelation is from Jesus.  Revelation is also about Jesus. We learn a great deal within these pages about Who Jesus is. It starts here with these declarations about Jesus. There are three titles here identifying Christ.

        He is the Faithful Witness. Jesus is the only trustworthy Witness regarding the things that matter most. He is the Witness that testifies within this book. He is the testimony of the Word of God. He is also the one Witness called regarding your trial and judgment. He is a faithful witness Who will testify that You are made righteous by His own sacrificial blood. 

        The Firstborn of the dead.  “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20). “He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy” (Colossians 1:18).  We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus because He was the first to physically die and then be raised to life. He is the ultimate example and icon of the victory that God has won for us over the greatest enemy.

        The Ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus is in charge. Jesus is victorious in eternity, but He is also sovereign over this life.  “They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings--and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers" (Revelation 17:14). “On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:16).  

        These are the truths that we must always keep at the front of our thinking and faith. No matter who wins a particular election or who receives an earthly coronation, Jesus is the Ruler over all the kings of the earth. Eventually, all will acknowledge this truth. “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).

         Father God, I rejoice in Your Son, my Lord, and Savior. I give thanks for the One who is the Faithful Witness of all truth. I give thanks that I can trust Him, who has made me righteous by His blood. I give thanks for Christ crucified and risen in victory. You are King of kings and Lord of lords. I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead. In victory, Amen.
