1 John 4
[19] We love because he first loved us.

God does not ask us to do anything He has not done. Even more importantly, God does not ask us to do anything He does not empower us to do.
Why should I love that person? Because I have first been loved completely, wholly, and without reservation. Why should I overlook that person's obnoxious personality? Perhaps because God overlooked my obnoxious personality completely, wholly, and without reservation!
Love begins with a motion initiated by God. He created the world out of love. He came looking for us when we got lost in the Garden because of love. He arranged ways of atonement out of love. He continued to reach out to us through the Prophets because of love. He sent His Son Jesus because of love. He died on the cross because of love. He sent His Holy Spirit because of love.
Why should we love? Because He first loved. How can we love? Only with His "first love" loving through us.
This is an excellent time to take inventory. Do I love others? Do I love God? Do I love myself? Perhaps if we fall short, it is because we have not fully received the love He has offered us.

Lord, Jesus, search my heart. I want ALL of the love You have for me. I feel so very undeserving, but I want all of this love you offer. Love the people around me through me today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
