John 16
[12] "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. [13] But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. [14] He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. [15] All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

The first work of the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, is to convict. He makes us aware of our need and the problem of our sin. The Counselor exposes us to the truth of our sin and unbelief. The Counselor exposes the truth of the righteousness of Jesus and that He is our only hope. The Counselor convinces us that we stand to be judged along with the enemies of God. The next work of the Counselor is to guide us into all truth.
The Counselor does not leave us naked and exposed in our sin. He brings us a remedy. He applies the truth of the atonement to our lives. He causes us to be born-again. He gives us life and causes us to be a new creation. He guides us into the Truth.
Jesus said, “I am the Truth.” The world today teaches that there is no truth. “Truth is relative”, they say. “Truth is whatever you want it to be.” But there is a singular truth. His name is Jesus. He is Truth. He is the revealer of absolute truth. He is not one truth among many. He is the Truth.
The Apostle Paul encouraged the church at Philippi to focus on the truth. “Brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things” (Philip. 4:8). It is the Holy Spirit, our Counselor, who guides us into such truth.
The Counselor also functions in the life of a believer to glorify Jesus. He causes us to praise the Lord Jesus and to serve Him. His fruit is manifest in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). The various gifts of the Spirit are manifest at His direction (1 Cor. 12). As the Counselor lives in us we begin to be an influence for God rather than against God. This work of the Counselor in our lives never draws attention to the believer but always to the Lord Jesus.
Are you experiencing the work of the Counselor in your life? He is there. He is real. He is ready to convict and convince. He is ready to save and to empower. He is ready to guide you into all Truth.

O Holy Spirit, my Counselor, show me the needs of my life. Reveal my sin. Bring me to new birth and guide me into all Truth. Guide me daily into the Truth of Jesus and the freedom provided by His atonement. Manifest the fruit of Your Spirit in my life today. In Jesus’ name.
