Hebrews 7
[15] And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, [16] one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. [17] For it is declared: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." [18] The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless [19] (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

It is interesting that we sometimes debate the ancestry of Jesus as the thing that qualified Jesus to redeem us. The genealogy is important in discovering Jesus as Messiah, to be sure, but the Writer points out that it was not on the basis of heritage that Jesus was qualified to be a Great High Priest. No, it was not so much the tribe Jesus came from as the incredible power He demonstrated. It is on the basis of the power of an indestructible life that Jesus became the highest of priests.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place... It is the power of the resurrection that makes Jesus different from the Levitical priesthood.

There is great power in a life offered as a sacrifice. We call this person a martyr. But there is immeasurable power in a life yielded, yet proved indestructible. We call that a Savior.

Lord, I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. In Jesus' name, Amen.
