Romans 8
[26] In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. [27] And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Have you ever been at a loss as to what or how to pray? We often wonder if we are praying correctly. Are we praying in accordance with the will of God? Are we asking for something that, in the end, would not be good for us? Paul has an answer. Allow the Spirit in you to pray for you.
In the same way that creation groans for redemption, the Holy Spirit within us groans, interceding on our behalf the needs that words cannot even express. The key here is that we must spend some time in quiet prayer, not speaking or even listening so much as communing with the Lord.
The Patriarch Isaac is an example of this sort of prayer. Scripture gives us every indication that Isaac had a different sort of relationship with the Lord than his father, Abraham. Where Abraham heard from the Lord directly and boldly obeyed, Isaac had a more quiet and reflective faith. The Bible says that he "went out to the field to meditate." (Genesis 24:63). In Hebrew, the word there means meditative prayer or utterance, to rehearse, repent, or go over a matter in one's mind.  It is a life of devoted reflection and utterance.
Where Abraham would contend with the Lord pleading for mercy upon a city, Isaac would walk with the Lord and reflect upon life.
If we fill our lives with noise, we cannot reflect. If we live with frenetic activity, it will be difficult for the Spirit within us to pray on our behalf.
Paul introduces our friend and counselor, the Holy Spirit, who searches our hearts for the hurts and burdens we sometimes are not even aware of. The Holy Spirit can reveal needs we may have shoved down deep and reveal these to the mind of the Spirit in prayer.  The wonder of such prayer is that the Spirit always prays perfectly in harmony with the will of God.  We never have to wonder if the Spirit will intercede correctly.

O Holy Spirit of God, pray in me. Search me and know me. Discover the hurts and needs of which I am not aware and lift these before the throne of grace. In Jesus' name.
