Romans 8
[28] And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

How can the death of a child work for good? How can a flooded town be accorded to His purpose? How can a crumbling city find good in an earthquake? But even closer to home, how can a job loss, a plant closing, a crop loss, or painful family estrangement work for good?  But that is what God's Word says. We know that in all things, God works for good...
I once heard a pastor friend declare tearfully at the funeral of a child that this was NOT the will of God. It seems frightening to think that God would "will" such a loss. But on second thought, is it not even more frightening to think that the world is somehow out of God's control and care? So, Paul says ALL THINGS.
The words "work together" come from a single Greek word 'sunergei' from which we get the word "synergy." Synergy means a "combined action" that is greater than the sum of the parts. The Greek here is rich. The word means literally to create and eliminate, place and replace, connect and group, interrelate and intermingle, shape and forge, press and stretch, move and operate, control and guide, arrange and influence.
In all things, God creates a synergy that is for good. The good and even the synergy is most likely not apparent to the creation, or the creatures involved. We may be blessed to glimpse a fragment of His grand plan and purpose, but such insight is usually much later. God's synergy is all things working together in ways that are indeed good according to His purpose.
We generally puzzle over the tragedies, but ALL THINGS also include matters far more mundane. We are usually unaware of the tragedies of life prevented by God's providential care.  We might be frustrated by a delay in our schedule, but that is because we fail to see the accident that missed us due to the delay. We may become impatient with unexpected events but fail to see God steering us into an encounter He desires for a special purpose.
This synergy is not some cheap fatalism. The Word calls us to trust that the God of the universe is closely involved with His creation. He is constantly at work weaving the days and lives of His creation into His will and desire.

Lord, I choose to trust the synergy of Your grace at work in my life. I promise to try hard to do the right things, but I also promise to trust You in the midst of the diversions and hardships. Give me Your grace. In Jesus' name.
