Genesis 11
[10] This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad. [11] And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
[12] When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah. [13] And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
[14] When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber. [15] And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
[16] When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg. [17] And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
[18] When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu. [19] And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
[20] When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug. [21] And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
[22] When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor. [23] And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
[24] When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah. [25] And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
[26] After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

Earlier, Moses had traced the families of the earth that came from Noah's three sons. He explained how they became scattered about the earth. Here, he directs our attention again to the 10 descendants of Shem. This can be seen as the "line of the promise."
This passage presents a vertical genealogy tracing ancestry from Shem to Abram. From Abram, a new nation will come that will be the lampstand of the light of the world. The next part of the story will depend upon this genealogy in much the same way that our Gospels present the genealogy of Jesus. This link is essential because the ancestry of Israel is rooted here in a place called Haran.
Some people think of genealogy and ancestry as a study stuck in the past. In reality, we are seeing the way that God builds bridges toward the future. Out of the disastrous consequences of human sin, God was at work in all these things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes.
Sometimes, we look around at our world, and it is easy to see nothing but doom. How in the world will we ever find our way out of this mess? Without God, there is no way out. But with God, nothing is impossible. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

Lord God, deepen my roots as I grow out of my past. Show me the path forward that I may take hold of that which You too cold of me. Reveal to me Your plans. Give me Your hope and future. In Jesus' name.
