Hebrews 10
[23] Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
God has done a magnificent work for us in Christ! In response, we are called to draw near to Him in full assurance of faith. We are also called to hold unswervingly to that hope and faith. The word used here means to seize, hold down, permanently retain, possess, or take captive. God will not let go of us (John 10:29). We are called not to let go of the hope we profess! We are called to hold fast to our profession of faith without wavering. This is our lifeline tied to the future.
What is that lifeline? A person who makes a true profession in Christ believes two things: 1) That Jesus Christ is his personal Savior from sin and death, the perfect sacrifice for his sins, which makes it possible for God to forgive his sins.2) That Jesus Christ is the risen Lord, the High Priest who is seated at the right hand of God, the perfect Mediator and Intercessor who makes us acceptable to God and presents him as perfect and sinless before God.
When a person professes Christ to be his Savior and Lord, he is to hold that profession fast and without wavering. We may have many questions about life or the events of this world, but we are not to listen to the voices of the world and return to worldliness and materialism. We are not to doubt that Jesus Christ died for us. We are not to doubt that Jesus Christ arose. We are not to listen to the voices of doubt and false teaching. We are not to let circumstances, trials, or temptations shake our faith in Christ.
Now, how can we do that? What if that is "just not in us"? There is one strong reason for holding our profession fast— "He who promised is faithful. "God keeps His Word. And He is the One who has promised to let the sacrifice of Christ count as the sacrifice for our sins. God is the One who has promised to accept us in Christ— to accept us in His perfection and righteousness. God will do exactly what He has said. He is faithful.
Therefore, "let us hold fast the profession of our hope without wavering." We have been saved and will inherit eternal life. We will be given the glorious privilege of living with God forever and ever in the new heavens and earth.
This is the call of God. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "My dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain" (1 Cor. 15:58).
To the church in Galatia, Paul wrote: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (5:1)."Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (6:9).
Peter exhorted believers: "Prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed" (1 Pet. 13)."Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings (1Pet. 5:8-9)."Be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position" (2 Pet. 3:17).
Hold to the hope.
Lord God, give me the assurance of faith so as to hold unswervingly to the hope that You have put in me by the work and power of Jesus. Keep me from temptation and distraction. Keep me from the lure of the world. Keep me focused on You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
