Chapter 22 of 2 Samuel is entirely a song of praise regarding God's strength and faithfulness in delivering David from his enemies.

2 Samuel 22:7-17
[7] In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. [8] "The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry. [9] Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. [10] He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. [11] He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. [12] He made darkness his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. [13] Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. [14] The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. [15] He shot arrows and scattered [the enemies], bolts of lightning and routed them. [16] The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. [17] "He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.

The Lord's work in saving us is amazing and magnificent! This song is a wonderful poetic description of the Lord's awesome power and might… but it is even more. David was not just taking a poetic license. This was not a creative writing exercise! This was a bold revelation of what goes on in the realm of the spirit.
While some of the imagery in this song of salvation is figurative, such as the nostrils of God, the power described here is absolutely real. Figures such as the cherubim are not at all imaginary. The shaking of the foundations is absolutely real.
Here is the powerful truth: When David called out… the Lord heard and responded! He shook the heavens and the earth in order to reach down and draw David out of the depths. The vision here is that of God's great work of salvation when we call upon Him.
With darkness as His canopy around him—He blazed with bolts of lightning and thundered with truth from heaven. He scattered the enemies of God and routed them. The foundations of the earth and the way of the world were laid bare by the rebuke of the Lord.
These images given to David remind us of the way that God reached down in the person of Jesus, the descendant of David, the Son of God. When the Lord battled the forces of darkness to save your soul, the foundations of heaven shook, and the earth trembled. Darkness was the canopy in the middle of that day as Jesus completed His work for you and then declared, "It is finished."
Rejoice today in awe before God, Who is your rock and salvation, your fortress and deliverer.

Father God, we have called out in distress, and You have heard the voices of Your people. You have reached down and shaken the foundations as You removed the barriers of sin and death. You have fought my battle and won my fight. You reached down into the depths. You reached down from on high and took hold of me to draw me out of deep waters. Thank You God. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
