Revelation 1

[7]  Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. [8]  "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

He is coming with the clouds. This is the focus of Revelation. This is not about the moment of the Rapture. Every indication from Scripture tells us that when Christ takes the church out of the world at the Rapture, He doesn't appear to everyone. This is different.

At the time of the Rapture, Jesus does not come to the earth. Believers are to be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. If Christ will be coming to the earth at that time, there is no point in being caught up in the air. Therefore, this is not the Rapture that is being described in this verse. This is His return to the earth as King.

This is the Second Advent. This is the personal and physical coming of the Lord that is the great and glorious Day of the Lord. Every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. Every tribe of the earth will wail.

Christ's coming will be supernatural and, in some manner, open and known to all. Even those who "pierced" him will see him. This may be Pilate, Annas, and Caiphas—and those Jewish leaders of the Sanhedrin who pronounced him guilty.

This moment will come later in the timeline of Revelation after a number of judgments and the Great Tribulation. Revelation is clear about this event. “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book” (22:7).  “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done” (22:12).

The divine promise of Christ's return is given by the Father, "So shall it be! Amen." The authority to make this pronouncement is foundational. God himself speaks and, with his own signature, vouches for the truthfulness of the coming of Christ.

Here is the signature: "Alpha and Omega" - "Lord God" - "who is, and who was, and who is to come" and "the Almighty."  Alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and mean "First" and "Last" or the "Beginning" and the "End."  We will see this repeated as the signature of God giving testimony to His truth.

God is the absolute source of all creation and history. He was before all things. Nothing lies outside of him. Therefore, he is the "Lord God" of all and is continually present to his people as the "Almighty."

Lord, I thank You for Your Revelation. I thank You that You have set forth a Day in which all things will be made right. I look forward to that day of Your glorious return. I trust in You as Alpha and Omega, the One who was, who is to come, the Almighty. In the Name of Jesus.
