1 Peter 4

[3] For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do -living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. [4] They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. [5] But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. [6] For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

Well... have you had enough?  Have you spent enough time in your past doing what pagans do?  I'll bet you have.  Debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry?

You may respond to that thought from Peter's pen with a bit of rightful indignation.  Because if you were raised in the faith, none of those might apply to you.  You may rightly claim that you have spent no time, or nearly no time, in the terrible pursuits of the flesh that Peter has listed. And yes, no time is enough time.

How much is enough time?  How much time do we have to spend in sin?  As much as it takes to learn that it is deadly and forever separates us from God.

To rephrase the question:  How much sewage must a person drink before they determine it is a deadly stench unfit for consumption?  For some, it takes only a whiff of the odor. Some will never even go near the cesspool of worldly temptation.  But, for others, it will require a lengthy swim.  The world beckons, and no matter what you say, there are those who will not understand your reluctance to party after work. They will not get your refusal to do business in a topless bar, or your failure to find amusement in a bachelor party atmosphere.

The invitation will be shouted, "Come along! Jump in. The sewage is fine..."  And anger is the response when you refuse.  "Did you hear the latest?" beckons the gossiper calling you to swim in a pool of slanderous treachery. The media cries to us:  "Come watch the funny television comedy about fornication and sodomy... it's the latest craze!"  "Come and see the movie all the critics are talking about‑‑ filled with blasphemy and punctuated with violence and obscenity.  Come on in for a swim... you will get used to the stench."

So, the question may be a fair one.  Have you spent enough time in your past doing what the pagans do?  I have.  I hope you have, too, even if only a whiff.  Certainly, the world will think it strange that you do not plunge in, but they will have to give an account.  The Gospel is preached even to those who are dead and dying, that there may be no excuse.

Lord, Jesus, I have had enough.  I don't need any more sin, not even a whiff, to know that I love You, and I don't want anything to separate me from You.  I love You.  Let me swim in the crystal water of Your Spirit.  Plunge me deep into the waters of Your love.  In the Name of Jesus.  Amen.
