Exodus 34
[9] "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance."
The Lord revealed His character and attributes to Moses dramatically and powerfully. The response of Moses was first to worship. "Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped" (34:8). Then there was a request from Moses. He pleaded for mercy before God on behalf of this "stiff-necked people", as God had called them (33:3, 12, 14). Go with us, Lord. Forgive our wickedness and sin and take us as Your inheritance.
It was a plea for the Lord to continue on this journey rather than simply send the watch of an angel along with them. But the request was even more than that. Moses was pleading for a renewal of the promise God had made to go with them. Moses asked that the Lord once again take Israel as His inheritance. We often think of the Lord bringing Israel into its inheritance, but Israel was also the Lord's inheritance. "But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you now are" (Deut. 4:20).
The word used here means "something inherited" but refers more broadly to an estate or occupancy, a possession, heirloom, or portion. Moses was asking that the people be restored as the possession and estate of God, the dwelling or occupancy of God.
In Christ, we have an inheritance from the Lord. But we are also the inheritance of the Lord. We are part of the prized estate and occupancy of God. We were redeemed at a great price by the work of the Lord (1 Cor. 6:20, 7:23). The Lord Jesus has pleaded on our behalf and made the necessary payment so that we might be restored to that prized place with God. He has forgiven our wickedness and sin.
What a wonderful place the Lord Jesus has won and purchased for us! We are the inheritance of God. We are the estate and dwelling place of the Lord. We are His residence. We are His occupancy. We are His prized heirloom.
Lord God, I give thanks for Your faithfulness! I give thanks for Your forgiveness and provision in Jesus. I give thanks that I am Your inheritance. Fill me. Occupy me. Take full residence in me. In Jesus' name.
