Exodus 15
[22] Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.

What comes after worship by the Sea?
Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea and into the desert. Unfortunately, the desert is where we go after corporate worship. This is one of the reasons why worship is so important! We need to draw near to the Lord, drinking deeply from the water of His Spirit so that we can make it through the desert. Moses and the Israelites traveled for three days without finding water.
Of course, the Israelites needed physical water, but there is a powerful image here for us. We need water daily. A camel may consume 30 gallons of water and then go for several days without drinking. But we are not camels! Humans need water daily, both physical and spiritual!
We need daily times with the Lord. We also begin to thirst for corporate worship every three to four days. Corporate worship may involve only two or three believers, but it meets a deep need. Weekly corporate worship would seem to be a minimal provision for survival in the desert.
Imagine going to the doctor because you feel crummy. In the course of conversation, you reveal that you only drink water once or twice a month. Or what about the person who drinks only twice a year? Of course, there is wonderful water in private worship with the Lord. Still, there is something uniquely refreshing about gathered or corporate worship even with a few.
The consideration of worship begins with the heart, walk, focus, and hope of worship. Frequency is a final thought. Many encouraging us to worship would start with the issue of frequency. Some churches call members to annually "pledge" a certain number of Sundays as a goal for attendance in corporate worship. But the frequency of our corporate worship is irrelevant if the heart, walk, focus, and hope of worship are missing. Simply sitting in church accomplishes very little.
So how is your worship life? Frequent attendance upon private and corporate worship is a significant part of growing in the Lord. Not out of obligation but because we thirst for the Lord.

Father, teach me the pattern of both private and corporate worship. Take away the sense of obligation. Draw me near to You that I may drink deeply from the River of Life. In Jesus' name.
