1 John 5
[18] We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. [19] We know that we are children of God and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. [20] We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. [21] Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

Okay, to wrap up 1 John, there is some good news and some bad news. So, which do you want to hear first?
Alright, the bad news first. The world is under the control of the evil one. Surprise! What? You already knew that? Okay. Very observant.
The good news? Well, when we are born of God, we no longer continue in sin; we are safe from the evil one, we are children of God, we understand God's ways, and we can know God and His truth. The world is under the control of the evil one, but we are not!
Why, then, do we struggle? If we are born of God and those born of God do not continue to sin, why do I still sin? (One possibility is that we are not born of God. You can clear that up very quickly by asking Jesus into your life.) But what John actually says is that if we are born of God, we will not "continue to sin"; we will no longer be compelled to continue in our known sin, and our habits and enslavement to sin are broken. Sin has no power over us. Neither does the evil one unless we give back some control to sin. The only sin with power in our lives is the one we surrender to.
That may be why John closes with this simple phrase. Sometimes, the most important thing is said last. In this case, "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." That is where we mess up. When we do not CLAIM the Good News and instead surrender to the Bad News, that is idolatry. You see, the bad news has no power over us as long as we believe and stand in the Good News.
What is an idol? Anything we worship besides God. Anything we put before God. Anything we think is more powerful than God. Any problem we think God can't handle. Anything that comes between us and God. Any sin we think God can't deal with. Anything that we love more than God. Any hurt we nurse instead of forgiving. Anything that absorbs the attention and energy that should be directed to God. Anything that captures our thoughts and imaginations to the exclusion of God.
Keep yourself from idols.

Lord, I want to be born of God. Come in and make me a new person by the power of Your Spirit. Set me free from the power of sin in my life. Protect me from the evil one. Show me the idols in my life so I may cast them down and focus only on You. I choose to stand in the Good News today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
