Ephesians 3
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, [18] may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, [19] and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Being rooted and established in love, this is where we find the power with other believers to grasp the love of God. The word here means to "seize" or apprehend, comprehend but also eagerly possess.
We are called to grasp how wide, long, high and deep is the love of Christ. If you think about those words, you will realize that the Holy Spirit is talking about a fourth dimension of Christ's love for us. It is wide, long and high, but it is also deep. Scientists used to talk about time as the fourth dimension, but now they actually formulate mathematically another abstract dimension derived by generalizing the rules of three-dimensional space. It has been studied by mathematicians and philosophers for almost two hundred years. I don't understand it. But maybe that is the point.
The word that Paul used for this fourth dimension of love is a word that literally means "profundity" or the extent of mystery or depth. The Holy Spirit could have described Christ's love regarding time and eternity, but instead, He spoke of the utterly profound depth of Christ's love, the unfathomable immensity of His love commitment to you. It is a love that surpasses knowledge and fills us to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Okay. Now seize that! Grab it where you can. The truth is that if we ever grasp the love of Christ or even a piece of it, we will experience some amazing things. We will find ourselves having Love for others, Joy in every day, Peace that He is in charge, Patience with other people, Kindness toward people in every kind of situation, Goodness in our heart that expects the best, Gentleness in our dealings with people, Faithfulness in our relationships, and Self-Control in our dealing with others (Galatians 5:22).
When we seize hold of the depth and profundity of Christ's love for us, our tongues won't be sharp, our habits won't be dishonoring, our tempers will not flare, our thoughts won't be out of control, our keyboards will be well-tempered, and our struggle with temptation won't be long and difficult.
Have you grasped the immensity of Christ's love for you? Have you started? We are called know this love that surpasses knowledge and be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Father God, help me to seize the love. Help me to grasp the width, length, height and depth of Christ's love for me. I am overwhelmed by Your thoughts of me. In Jesus' Name.
