2 Samuel 23:1-10
[1] These are the last words of David: "The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel's singer of songs: [2] "The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. [3] The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: 'When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, [4] he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.' [5] "Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire? [6] But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns, which are not gathered with the hand. [7] Whoever touches thorns uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear; they are burned up where they lie."

The list of David's mighty men is preceded by a short poem titled "The Last Words of David." The passage might also be entitled "Final Insights." The poem describes much of David's self-understanding after having endured so much in his life.
First, David recognized his humble beginnings as the son of Jesse, but then he focused on how he was exalted by the Most High. He was the man anointed by the God of Jacob, who became Israel's singer of songs. There is a noticeable progress from the humble son of a Bethlehemite commoner to the poetically gifted king of Israel, which David attributed to his having been chosen and anointed by the Lord. He was anointed.
Next, David acknowledged the prophetic nature of his calling. He was a unique king in that he was God's instrument, and God spoke to him and through him to the nation. David was able to rule righteously in the reverential fear of God. A king who rules as an agent of God is, he said, like the brilliance of the sun on a cloudless morning and like a clear day after rain. He had a message.
Finally, David realized that he was covenanted to the Lord. This Davidic Covenant was the way God chose and blessed him. God had made an everlasting commitment with him and his dynasty, a covenant that guaranteed his ultimate well-being. In contrast, evil men, like so many thorns, would be cast aside to be consumed by God's judgment. He was in covenant.
This final imagery is much like that described by Jesus in the parable of the wheat and the weeds. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn (Matthew 13:30). The Son of Man will send out his angels. They will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil (Matt. 13:41).
We don't want to miss the historic uniqueness of this calling and work through the person of David. But we also don't want to miss what it teaches us about discovering the calling of God in our own lives.
We may not be a "king David," but we certainly will rise above our beginnings, but only as the result of God's anointing in our lives. If we can find the cross He has called us to take up, then we can also find the purpose for which He has anointed us.
As we listen to God and experience His grace, we will receive the message that He has given us uniquely-- the testimony of God's work in our lives. We are to set apart Christ as Lord in our hearts and then always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15). We are to be a beacon through the witness of His Spirit bringing the message he has put in us. We are called to be in covenant with Jesus, allowing Him to be the One who judges and separates the wheat from the weeds. We are anointed simply to bring the message.
What will be the final insights that you will have about your life? Will you have found your purpose? Completed your path? Did you discover your anointing? Carried your message?

Father God, help me to walk in Your anointing. Help me, by Your Spirit, to find the purpose You have anointed for me and the message You desire for me to communicate. Help me to complete those works that You have prepared for me by Your Grace. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
