Fifty-Two Days to Victory

Nehemiah 6
[15] So the wall was completed on the twenty fifth of Elul, in fifty two days. [16] When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
[17] Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. [18] For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son in law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. [19] Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

Have you ever wondered what God could do through a person or a group of people wholly surrendered to Him and His purposes? We have a great testimony here from Nehemiah. The wall of Jerusalem, which was nothing more than rubble, was completely restored in fifty-two days by families and friends who worked together for the Lord. It was a miraculous feat. After being laughed at, scoffed at, attacked by rumor, and undermined by intimidation, the wall was finally done to the glory of God.

In fact, it was a feat so miraculous that many have questioned its validity, saying that it would be impossible to complete such a wall in this amount of time, no matter how many people were working. Even the Jewish historian Josephus, writing centuries later, gave dates that indicated a longer period for the task. But while Josephus is thought to be reliable, his writing was never added to the canon of Holy Scripture and does not stand above the testimony of God’s Word.

The question is this—Could God have empowered Nehemiah to miraculously rebuild the wall in such a short span of time? Interestingly enough, archaeological investigations by Kathleen Kenyon seem to confirm the Biblical record of this historic event. Her estimation of the circuit around the city and discovery of a part of Nehemiah's wall indicate a structure solidly built, about 2.75 meters thick, with a rough finish, as though executed rapidly.

The answer to the question? Not because of an archeological analysis examining some rocks but because of God's Word—Yes. God can do exactly as He pleases in whatever period of time with people who are surrendered to Him. With God, even what appears monumental is achieved with stunning speed. He has been known to lift open the sea so that his children can pass through without building a bridge or tunnel. He has defeated huge armies with small bands of warriors who never should have been able to win. He even does a nifty three-day resurrection.

So here is a good question. Is there something monumental in your life that you need God to accomplish? Is there something that appears impossible but would secure a part of God's Kingdom? Are you facing an impossible task? An impossible journey? An impossible need for protection and security? This same God, the God of Nehemiah, is your God and can do the impossible. He can build security in your life and in mine with stunning speed. He can rebuild that which was broken down and create protection once again. We know that what is impossible with man is possible with God. The God that Nehemiah trusted is here for you and me to trust as well. Imagine just for a moment how much the world might change for God in the next fifty-two days through a person or some people surrendered to Him?

Lord, give me the faith to believe You for whatever You direct, no matter how impossible it may sound. Lord, I offer to you the next fifty-two days of my life. Build the walls that are needed and break down those that are not. Make me into who You want me to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
