Genesis 50
[22] Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years [23] and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph's knees.
[24] Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." [25] And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place."
[26] So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Genesis closes after fifty chapters with the promise of the Land still unfulfilled but also with the expressed hope that God will surely come and bring His people out of Egypt. Egypt will now serve for centuries as a place for God's people to grow and multiply into the great nation promised to Abraham.
Joseph lived to see his great-great-grandchildren by Ephraim and his great-grandchildren by Manasseh. What a joy! Placing them on his knees at their birth was signifying they belonged to him. Joseph lived to be 110 in the land of Egypt, and, like his father before him, he made his brothers promise that his bones would be taken out of that land. His body, like that of Jacob, was embalmed.
Genesis closes with the expectation of a visitation from on high. The words of Joseph, given twice, amazingly summarize the hope expressed throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament that God will surely come to the aid of His people. The company of the faithful would wait in expectation for that visitation of the promised Seed, the Messiah, who will bring the curse to an end and establish in reality the long-awaited blessing of God.
The recording of God's history will now be silent until the time for Israel to come out of Egypt. They will not come out of Egypt without prompting. Only the agony of slavery will push the people of God out of the comfortable nest of Goshen to journey toward the land of promise.

Dear Lord, thank You for the message of Genesis. Thank You for the wonder of Creation, the understanding of sin, and the miracle of redemption we have found here. Thank You for the plan You began long ago to save Your people from the devastation and brokenness of sin. Keep me on the path, O Lord. Walk with me on this journey. In Jesus' name.
