Hebrews 2
[1] We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. [2] For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, [3] how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. [4] God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Have you ever tried driving through the night on a lonely road? It is the most agonizing thing to me. I may try as hard as I can, but I still find myself drifting. It is a terrifying experience to suddenly realize that your car has crossed a center line and is in a terribly dangerous place!
The truth is that almost no one ever sets out to cross the line. But they do sometimes because they get tired, a little careless, or they are not paying attention. The lines on the road can get fuzzy, the edges are unclear, and we are suddenly startled by headlights and cannot fathom how we drifted so far.
The same is true in our journey with God. We don't get far from God all at once. We never intend to veer radically from His path. No one ever sets out to cross the line, but they do because they get tired or a little careless and stop paying attention to the important things. The lines get fuzzy, the edges are not clear, and we are suddenly startled by headlights and cannot fathom how we drifted so far. The spiritual consequences can be even more tragic!
So what is the answer? Don't drive in the darkness. Sounds simple, but really it is just that basic. We have been given a wonderful Gospel of light and life. We need to pay more careful attention to what we have heard— this great salvation— rather than the latest spiritual craze about angels or how to find some experience or how to get wealthy overnight. The writer of Hebrew points out that even if everything said by angels comes to pass and everything you hear or read about an angel is absolutely true, what does it matter if we ignore such a great salvation? There is no message to compare. There is nothing greater.
This Gospel of Grace is everything. Announced by God Himself, confirmed by those who heard and testified to by signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.
So where are YOU today? Have you drifted? Have you crossed the line? Are you just now snapping out of the fog and realizing that there are dangerous headlights in front of you? It is time to return to the path God has for you. Get back to the Gospel of grace in Jesus.
Lord, I am putting my full attention upon You and Your Gospel of Grace. I am attending to nothing but so great a salvation. I am standing in Your grace alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
