Luke 12

[35] "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, [36] like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

Jesus was very clear. We are to live in a state of readiness. More than ever we live in a time when we must live in readiness. Our Lord may return at any time. We could debate the various theories concerning the timing of Christ's return, or, we can take Him at His word and live in readiness.

We are to live life prepared to throw open the door and welcome the Master in. We are to live dressed and ready to serve Him. We must live with our lamps lit brightly showing the way home.

We tend to be people who prepare, but we prepare mostly for temporary things. There are many ways we try to prepare. It is a good thing to prepare for retirement. It is a good to prepare for a vacation. It is a good to prepare for the winter, or for a rainy day. It is good to be prepared for hurricane season, if you live in such an area. It is good to prepare for a career by attending school.

But are we prepared for the return of the Lord? Are we equally ready for His return? Do we live in readiness for His glorious arrival? Are we dressed for service to Him? Are our lamps burning?

Jesus tells us that day will be marvelous! When the Master comes home He will not drag in tired and weary from His celebrations with friends. He will not head off to bed. That will be when the real party begins! That is when the real celebration will start! That is when He will set before us a banquet like we have never ever seen!

The Lord has tarried long in His return. Perhaps this is because of His mercy. We can only know that His judgments and timing are right. But even though we may feel He has tarried, we must live prepared for His imminent return. We pray for His Kingdom to come and His will to be done. We must do all that we can to be a part of transforming the world. We do this with the knowledge that this day may be our very last day. This may be our very last chance. The day will come when we do not expect it, like a thief in the night. We can be ready even though we will be surprised.

Here is the truth. Every one of us will meet the Lord. We may meet Him before finishing the next sentence. We never know. We may meet Him today or we may meet Him in the air on the glorious day of His return. But whatever the case, it will be when we do not expect it
