Hebrews 10
[19] Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, [20] by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, [21] and since we have a great priest over the house of God, [22] let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. [24] And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. [25] Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
So what shall we do? In response to the mighty work of God in giving this New Covenant relationship, how shall we respond? The Writer exhorts us to do four things— draw near, hold on, spur toward, and meet together. These are the fundamental motions of a believer who has been made pure and clean by the Great Priest Jesus and is living in the New Covenant.
Drawing near. Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. The point of the magnificent work of Jesus is not that we should stay away from God. We are called near to Him. As New Covenant people, we are called to come into the very presence of God with confidence. The Greek means to draw very close to.
Holding on. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. We might think we are supposed to cling to God, but actually, we are in His grip. We are called to hold on to the hope we have been given. The Hebrew concept of hope means a cord that leads to the future. We are to hold onto the cord of hope in Jesus and His return for us. Why? Because the One who has made the promises we believe in is faithful.
Spurring toward. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. We also have a responsibility for one another. We are to encourage each one toward love and good deeds. The word literally means to "provoke". We do not provoke with a negative intention, but we are to provoke love in one another and stir up good deeds. We are to be provocative in our love for one another and "spurring" one another toward living out the love of Christ toward others.
Meeting Together. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another— and all the more as you see the Day approaching. We are to gather for the purpose of encouragement. We are not to forsake this gathering of the set apart ones. The purpose is exhortation. This is a gentler word than the last— parakaleo— meaning to call near, invite, invoke, come alongside. It means to implore by encouragement, not discouragement.
That is the movement of God in us— drawing near to Him, holding onto the hope, spurring one another toward love and good deeds, and remembering to meet together for the purpose of encouragement. How are you doing in that flow?
Father God, thank You for the New Covenant and the pathway You made possible for me. I choose to draw near to You. I cling to the hope of Your Son Jesus. I commit to spur my brothers and sisters toward love and good works. I will not forsake the meeting of the saints. I will encourage my brothers and sisters. Teach me how to walk in the New Covenant. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
