Hebrews 11
[1] Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
[2] This is what the ancients were commended for.
[3] By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Don't you enjoy walking through a sidewalk art festival? There is a wonderful festival in Winter Park, Florida, near where I grew up. It is great to wander through the maze of canvases and sculptures. There are always some wonderful pieces to ponder and admire. Funny, though, I have never really questioned whether a piece had a creator. The idea that oil or watercolor somehow splattered or smeared by itself upon the canvas never occurs to me. Somehow, the fact of a creator is always obvious.

Yet, this is truly where we begin when we talk about Biblical faith. We start with creation faith. This is faith that all we see did not just happen. This is faith that we are creatures, and so there must be a Creator. This is faith that what surrounds us is creation, so there must be a Creator. This is faith that somewhere there was a beginning, and in the beginning there was God. It is the first leap of faith. It is our one unprovable yet undeniable tenet. The Bible begins with these words: In the beginning God... This is the one thing that we must trust before all else.

Yes, we can argue about the logic of God’s existence. We can argue how silly it is to look at a piece of art on a canvas and think that there is no artist. We can look at the incredible order, expanse, and detail of creation and argue that there is no other conclusion but God as Creator. But it is still a matter of faith because the Creator defies the creation's approval.

God offers to His highest, most conscious, most thoughtful beings this opportunity: to have faith. He never proves Himself on our terms. He never needs to do so. He already took the first step in creating us. Now, He simply waits for our response: trust. Relationship.

Yes, there are a thousand questions. If God was in the beginning, what came before God? If God made the universe, what did He use? If there was no Home Depot, where did He get His materials? These are all quite beyond us. So, by faith, we simply understand this much: the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

God created out of nothing. But how? At his command. He spoke creation into being. There are few words to describe it. The language of the poet does a better job than that of the physicist. Some of the best physics is rather poetic anyway.

So, have you pondered creation lately? We tend to take it for granted. Have you pondered the wonder of a leaf, a star, a bird, a flower, your own hand, a baby, or a sunset? We really do rush around too much. The best "faith stuff" may be the most basic. In the beginning... God.

Have you pondered your Creator lately? Most of all, He would like you to get to know Him. Yes, by faith.

Lord, I am in awe of you and your magnificent creation. But more than just knowing Your creation, I want to know You, by faith. In Jesus' name, Amen.
