Genesis 14
[8] Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim [9] against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings against five. [10] Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. [11] The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. [12] They also carried off Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.
[13] One who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. [14] When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. [15] During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. [16] He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

Pitching your tent toward Sodom can lead to more than a little bit of trouble! Lot found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Several kings declared war on Sodom and Gomorrah. They attacked the cities and took Lot captive along with the city's people. What a mess!
We don't often think of Abram as a warrior, but here we see that he did not take such an act lightly. Abram's people had grown to include hundreds. There was even a small group of trained fighters. Abram was ready to send these Special Forces behind the enemy lines in a search and rescue mission when this need arose. It wasn't long before Abram's commandos had rescued Lot and all his people along with their possessions.
This is an interesting story because it does not mention God. Surely God was there! But there are times when the Lord is at work in people, and it is not directly mentioned. Abram had learned to trust the Lord. The rescue of Lot was the obvious thing to do, and Abram seemed to follow the leading of the Lord in this rescue. In the following few verses, we see that Abram honored the Lord in the victory.
The truth is that there are many times when the Lord rescues through people! God can always intervene miraculously with angels or fire from above, but far more often, he chooses to work through people. That is why God created community. That is why there are family connections. That is why we have the Body of Christ. The Lord wants us to be involved with one another. The Lord wants us to hear the needs of one another and to respond.
Look around. Look at your life. Are you connected? Are you in community? If you are in community, the Lord already has you surrounded by people who may be called upon to rescue you should the need arise. He already has you connected with the special forces that can be called to action. He already has you assigned so that you can reach out to those who find themselves in a particular need or a place that requires rescue.
Listen today. Listen. Is the Lord wanting to work through you? We are never the power or source of rescue, but we are often the tools.

Lord, thank You for using people. Use me this day. I am listening. Help me see how others are used by You in my life. In Jesus' name.
