Big Problem— Bigger God

Nehemiah 2
[17] Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace." [18] I also told them about the gracious hand of my God upon me and what the king had said to me. They replied, "Let us start rebuilding." So they began this good work.

How do you share a big vision with people who feel small? How do you even grasp a big vision when you feel so very small? There is a careful balance needed in such a situation that clearly states the need and declares God's goodness to abundantly meet it. Nehemiah gives us a picture of that kind of leadership.

Nehemiah’s strength was that he could be frank and direct about the problems, but he didn't dwell on them. Instead, he shared the opportunity to be a part of something great that God was doing. But most important of all, Nehemiah encouraged the people by giving personal testimony of the grace of God and the miracles that had already occurred. The people's response is inspiring to every pastor, leader, and missionary! "Let's do it!" And they began this good work.

We can learn a lot here. Nehemiah did not dwell on the problem; he focused on the solution. He did not point the finger at the cause of the city's decay; he shared a vision for its restoration. He did not pause to cast blame; instead, he offered a definable action in response to a need. He was not overwhelmed by the enormity of the project or the lack in the finance report because his vision was based on the graciousness of God and His provision.

We have all been through those hard times and hard meetings when the problem seemed so big that we didn't even want to grapple with it. Such times are a great place for a few testimonies of God's victories. The people of Israel constantly reminded themselves in worship of the great things God had done. When we stop and remember the goodness of God, the great miracles He has wrought, the great provision He has made to bring us thus far, the problems don't look so big next to our awesome God. God is always, always bigger.

Do you have a huge task before you? Or maybe a big problem? Focus on our big God. Tell about the gracious hand of God and begin this good work.

Lord, I celebrate Your goodness today and the strength You give me for every situation. Help me to face squarely the task to which You are calling me. I rejoice that You have brought Your people so very far on the journey— out of Egypt— out of Babylon— out of darkness. Your grace has brought us safe thus far, and grace will lead us home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
