Galatians 6

[6] Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.

Paul is rather emphatic here.  This is not a suggestion.  It is an exhortation.  Anyone who received must share.  We are called to share all good things with the instructor.

This text is most often interpreted in reference to the financial support of those who teach God's Word. That is one important application.  Indeed, Paul was consistent in explaining the importance of caring for the needs of those who serve teaching the Word of God.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians: If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? (1 Cor. 9:11)  In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. (1 Corinthians 9:14).

This is in keeping with the direction of Jesus as He sent out the Apostles: Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages (Luke 10:7).  The Lord never meant that those who teach and minister should be impoverished.

But sharing all good things is about so much more than salaried support or financial remuneration.  Paul speaks of sharing as part of the "fellowship" or "partnership" (koinonia) of the Gospel. As the teacher shares the good things of the Word, so the congregation is to share all good things with the teacher.  This would include the victories and joys that flow out of a life instructed and lived according to the Word.

No genuine teacher of the Word does their work of preparation and instruction for financial remuneration.  If they do so, they are themselves deceived by the love of money.  The authentic teacher of the Word teaches out of a love of the Word and a love for the Lord.  They desire to see Christ glorified as lives are changed.

The very best "paycheck" that a teacher ever receives is the report of a life changed, encouraged, lifted, restored, renewed, or revived because of the Word.  Sharing of all good things involves sharing the wonder of God's plan as it unfolds.  It is sharing about bondages broken and shackles shattered.  It is sharing about marriages restored and children finding their way.  It is the joy of hearing about a teacher, preacher, or missionary called to service because of seeds planted long ago. We are responsible for sending these paychecks.

Have you been sharing all good things with your instructor?  Paul said that those who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17).  Have you shared some of the blessings the God has done in your life with the ones who planted those seeds?  Have you honored the Sunday School teacher, study leader, or teaching pastor who brought the Word of God to life in your presence?

Have you shared the victories of God in your life with those who invested in you by prayer and proclamation?  Have you shared all these good things with the ones who rightly divided the Word of Truth in your presence?

Father God, I pause to honor Your Word.  I am so grateful for the Word of God that transforms.  I rejoice in knowing that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.  I also rejoice in those who have taught me the Word.  I give thanks for those who have invested in me.  Show me how to share all good things with those who have faithfully taught the Word.
