Hebrews 11
[39] These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. [40] God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

The most amazing thing about the hall of faith is that all those listed were commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. Abel, Noah, Enoch, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Rahab could be called the giants of the faith and were commended for their faith. All received blessings or answers, or miracles that we sometimes are tempted to envy. "If only I could see a burning bush..." "If only God would sit with me under a tree in the noonday sun..." But the Writer reminds us that none of these really received what was promised. None had received "The Promise".

Everything in the Bible moves toward "The Promise" of Christ. For all the wonder we perceive in the faith relationship of the ancients, they were actually all longing for the age in which we live. All of Old Testament history groans with the birth pangs of Christ. Everything in Hebrew Scripture foreshadows, reaches, and stretches toward His arrival and the completion of God's plan of redemption.

The great truth here is that God had planned something better for us, so that only together with us they would be made perfect. The "faith giants" would be puzzled by the idea of us longing for their time and experiences in the age of Christ. The heroes of the faith are not made perfect apart from this age of believers in Jesus.

How about you? Are you tempted to long for something more like the ancients had? Do you sometimes wonder if there is not some "deeper walk" like that of biblical times that would quench that thirst? The truth is that we really live in the glory days. We live in the time of the promise. We live in the age of fulfillment. We live in the messianic era. We have the best of the best because we have Jesus.

Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to live in an age in which Your Gospel is available and accessible. Give me grace to walk with You. Give me boldness to share the treasure entrusted to me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
