Acts 29
[1]

It is a favorite old “preacher trick” to ask the congregation to turn in their Bibles to Acts 29, verse one. Pages flip and rustle about the room while some smile knowingly.
Of course, there is no 29th chapter of the book of Acts. Luke’s history of the “Acts of the Apostles” concludes with the brief description of Paul in prison in chapter 28. The point? Well it could be argued that the twenty-ninth chapter of Acts is the one that you and I are writing today.
Of course the story of our lives will never be canonized as Scripture but it is significant to consider the way in which our lives are continuing the history of God’s work through His people by the power of His Holy Spirit.
In Acts 29, would we find that we are living in response to the Good News we have heard? In Acts 29, are we walking the adventure of faith in a way similar to our brothers and sisters who went before us? In Acts 29, are we listening to God in the way that Peter and John did as they went up to the Temple for prayer and healed a man lame for many years?
Are we rising to the challenge as Paul did to cast off religiousness and walk in simple faith daily with the Lord? Are we listening to the Word and responding generously as Priscilla and Aquila did?
Are we opening our homes in hospitality the way that Lydia did in Philippi? Are we taking risks for Jesus the way that the Philippian Jailer did? Are we encouraging those God has called in the same way that Barnabas did to Paul and John Mark? Are we walking in support of leaders the way that Silas, Timothy and Luke did?
Will Acts 29 be a thrilling chapter or a dull one? Will Acts 29 record the story of a people who relentlessly pursued the heart of God and then passionately obeyed Him? Will Acts 29 record an exhilarating chapter of God’s work or just some religious business as usual? It is your decision.

O God, I thank You for those who have gone before me. I am so very grateful for those who have pursued the course of Your direction. Give me ears to hear, eyes to see, a heart that responds and the courage to act. In Jesus’ name.
