Exodus 30
[22] Then the LORD said to Moses, [23] "Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane, [24] 500 shekels of cassia--all according to the sanctuary shekel--and a hin of olive oil. [25] Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. [26] Then use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, [27] the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, [28] the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. [29] You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy. [30] "Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. [31] Say to the Israelites, 'This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. [32] Do not pour it on men's bodies and do not make any oil with the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. [33] Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from his people.'"

We often anoint a person with oil. This is usually in response to the Word when healing is needed. James writes: "Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven" (James 5:14-15).
But this was different. The Lord directed Moses to create an extraordinary sacred oil to be used only for the consecration of the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and its priests. Preparation of this oil required a special recipe to be mixed by a perfumer, an expert in such things.
This oil is called "sacred" or "set apart" because it was to be used only on these holy or set-apart furnishings. It was used to anoint Aaron and his sons because they also were instruments of worship as they offered themselves to God in the Tabernacle.
This oil had a unique fragrance that worshipers would associate with the holy place of meeting. This unique fragrance was not to be used commonly. Fragrant oils were used on a daily basis to moisturize the skin against the ravages of a desert climate and as a form of personal hygiene. To use this oil in such a way would result in excommunication from the nation. It was that special.
The Hebrew word for anoint is maw-shakh. It is the same word that is translated as Messiah. The Messiah of God is the "Anointed One." This unique oil brought a fragrance that reminded people of the coming Messiah.
For us, anointing is a sign of the presence of the Lord. We talk about the anointing of the Holy Spirit. This is an anointing that enables us to understand the Word of God. We often say that a speaker who brought blessing was "anointed." Or we may say that a message was an "anointed message." The Spirit of God, not the teacher or preacher, brings understanding, clarity, and application of the Word. You may spend time that you would call an "anointed" season of prayer or worship. It is the Holy Spirit that anoints these times and places.
The Holy Spirit can also anoint you with His Spirit. The Lord does this so you can understand His Word and message as you draw near Him. The apostle John wrote: "But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth" (1 John 2:20). As a Christ-follower saved by grace, you are the Temple of the Holy Spirit, and His anointing is upon you if you will receive it.
I must attest that some occasions and places were so "anointed" by the presence of God that I could smell a fragrance that could not have come from anywhere else. This is not a perfume or cologne in the room. There was something manifested that was tangible. It seems that the anointing of the Spirit brought a foretaste of the glory to come.

O holy God, I desire to know and experience your anointing. I pray that You would anoint me with understanding of Your Word and the unction to bring that Word to others. May I know the beauty and fragrance of close fellowship in your throne room. In the precious Name of the Anointed One, Messiah Jesus.
