Genesis 19
[31] One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. [32] Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father."
[33] That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
[34] The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father." [35] So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
[36] So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. [37] The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. [38] The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

The final verses of chapter 19 reveal the continuing consequence and tragedy of Lot's life and family. Lot's daughters feared that they would never have family. This was the posture in life that Lot had taught them. Rather than trust in the Lord, they conspired to get their father drunk and sleep with him to perpetuate the family.
Why should such depravity be a surprise? After all, this was the very behavior that the girls were raised around in Sodom.
The sadness of this passage can hardly be overstated. Lot would not have knowingly committed such a sin. The sin required his becoming drunk, and the daughters knew this! But then, in the weakness created by alcohol, Lot sinned horribly! The result was very much Lot's fault on all accounts, but it was indeed never where he set out to go.
The result of this sin was far-reaching. The descendants of the children born from this depraved incest became the longtime enemies of Israel. The Moabites and the Ammonites would be great thorns in the side of the Israelites when they eventually came into the land. The consequence of sin reached many generations.
It ends up that Lot and his kin are a poster-family for sinful dysfunction. Lot had every excellent opportunity given to him by the Lord. He had a "rich uncle", in every sense of that term! He had all the right protection and provision available but seemed to miss the chances to be found faithful. Lot squandered the legacy handed to him.
Sadly, Lot's poor leadership destroyed his family and created pain for generations. Is there a lesson to learn here, or what? Clearly, the problem with Lot did not lie in making a mistake from time to time. Lot failed because he fundamentally did not lean upon the Lord for his life and strength. And when he messed up, he failed to learn.
Are you trusting in the Lord God? Are you leaning upon Him for your understanding of the world around you? Or are you pitching your tent toward the "world"? Are you listening to the Lord and carefully protecting your family from the world's influences?

Father God, I come to You in complete surrender. Teach me Your ways. Reveal Your paths. Show me how to listen, trust and obey. Draw me near to You. In Jesus' name.
