1 Timothy 2
[1] I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone‑‑ [2] for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. [3] This is good, and pleases God our Savior, [4] who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, [6] who gave himself as a ransom for all men‑‑the testimony given in its proper time. [7] And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle ‑‑I am telling the truth, I am not lying ‑‑ and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
A brief conversation with Paul might run something like this…
P. "Pray for everyone."
"Everyone?"
P. "Yes. Everyone."
"For politicians?"
P. "Especially for politicians."
"But... I know of some politicians that God would not want in heaven."
P. "Oh, you do?"
"Well, okay. I admit it. It's really me that does not want them in heaven."
P. "God, our Savior, wants all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth."
"Everyone?"
P. "Everyone. He gave His Son as a ransom for everyone. If anyone is missed, then wouldn't that ransom be wasted? So pray for everyone."
"But some people may choose to find another way to God."
P. "Oh? What way is that?"
"I see your point."
P. "There is only one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
"You're sure about that?"
P. "Would I lie to you?"
"No, no. Certainly not."
P. "That is why I am a herald."
"Your name is Harold? I thought your name was Paul!"
P. "Herald,‑‑ not Harold. A herald is one who brings Good News."
"Really? Maybe I could be a herald, too?"
P. "Now you want to be Harold?"
"No, I want to be a herald of Good News... like you."
P. "I know. I was joking. How about we pray?"
Lord, I pray today for the salvation of all people-- especially elected officials, those who rule and are in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. I pray for all those who are ransomed but not yet free that they may come to a saving relationship with God through Jesus. Lord, give me the courage to be a herald of Your Good News. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
