Romans 5
[6] You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

At about 5:30pm on July 2, 1999, I called 9-1-1 from my home to report that I thought I was having a heart attack.  I was sweating profusely and had nausea and intense pressure in my chest. I never lost consciousness or the ability to communicate, but I was unable to help myself. I was powerless.
The Fire Rescue team was the first to arrive within just a few minutes, and the ambulance was not far behind. This team of professionals took my vital signs and attached me to an EKG while constantly contacting the Emergency Room. They quickly reported to the E.R. that I was having a "cardiac event." They would not tell me directly, but it wasn't difficult for me to decipher that jargon. The team immediately administered nitroglycerin and oxygen.
As the rescue team and rushed me toward the hospital, I had a lot of thinking to do on the way while they administered other medications. I am so glad they came.
When I read this text, I thought about this experience that took place nearly 22 years ago. I found myself wondering, what if they had not come?  What if the emergency team had been busy doing something else, eating lunch, or playing cards?  What if they had been tired? What if they just wanted to take some time off and skip a call just this once? Finish a television show or a game of hoops? What if they came a few hours later?
But, of course, as professional emergency personnel, they did not think of such a thing.  They responded. They came when I was powerless, just in time, at just the right time. I was rushed into a cardiac-cath lab that was miraculously available and got stents to open my RCA artery. I am so glad they came. So are my wife and children, and grandchildren.

That is what Jesus did for you and me. At just the right time, when humanity was suffering a spiritual cardiac arrest and didn't even know how to dial 9-1-1, Christ came and died for us.  He gave us life at just the right time when we were powerless.
Jesus came and administered just what we needed at just the right time.  I am sure there were more comfortable places for Him to be.  There had to be more glorious places for Him to reside. But, you see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. He had been taking the vital signs of humanity for some time, and, frankly, it did not look good.
On the day Jesus came to our rescue, the Temple was still littered with squalor, religion was corrupt, people were hurting people, and nothing seemed to be getting any better. The spiritual arteries of the human heart were clogged. Sin was winning, and the only hope was a powerful medication. A Radical treatment.  An extreme protocol.  So, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.  I am so glad.

Lord, thank You for coming to save me, at just the right time, when I was still powerless. Thank You for dying for the ungodly, me.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
